Adolescent Found Deceased Following False Allegations of Stealing Ashes
One 14-year-old boy was found dead just days after being wrongly accused of stealing the cremated remains of a dead infant during a burglary, a coroner's inquiry has heard.
Tragic Finding
Kai Lloyd's parents discovered his body in his room at his Flintshire home on 19 November 2021.
Untrue Allegations Start
The inquest learned how his mother got a communication on 8 November 2021 via online platforms, from a woman inquiring if her son was her offspring. The message stated: "Inform him appreciation for burgling my flat."
In a statement presented to the proceedings, Lisa Lloyd said the woman had been in the media, asserting her baby's ashes had been taken in a break-in - a claim which was false.
Police Inquiry
An investigation report from police later concluded the alleged break-in victim had "provided false information" and "it now appears that the items was never stolen in the beginning".
Media reports about the alleged taken ashes attracted online responses, and although Kai was not named in the posts, his mother said people "understood it was him".
The "online posts were extremely distressing", she stated.
Emotional Wellbeing Impact
She added that her son had been identified with moderate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that condition, other individuals' opinions genuinely were important to him.
"This must have hurt him deeply," she commented, "especially when this was not true".
The teenager was arrested at home, but no evidence was discovered. He was transported to a law enforcement facility and later released pending further inquiry.
Police said they would be in contact, the inquest learned, but had failed to contacted the family by the moment of his death.
Withdrawal and Anxiety
His mother said her son "became isolated" after the arrest and "would keep asking me whether I had received anything from the police", because his condition meant sometimes "certain periods could feel like days".
When she talked to him about the alleged incident, she said her child informed her he had gone into the house because the resident who resided there had said he could utilize the toilet anytime he wanted, but denied removing anything.
Online Bullying
In a joint statement between her and her spouse, the mother said her child was being harassed online after the allegations.
The proceedings heard that one 19-year-old encouraged the teenager to end his life.
She had no worries on the evening before he died, describing how she had heard him "chuckling and joking".
She described him as a "caring, affectionate" young man, and said her "relatives is completely devastated".
He had been "clearly concealing his concerns", she stated, adding that he could not stand to have anyone "have negative thoughts of him".
Educational Reaction
The hearing received testimony from school staff at the local High School.
On November 8th, she "overheard some students talking that Kai had been arrested and that was the first I learned".
"He told me... he'd done nothing wrong," she added.
After the conversation, the educator said she rang Kai's parents' telephone and left a message saying she had spoken to Kai about the allegations.
The court heard his parents said they did not receive that communication.
Formal Conclusion
Lead coroner informed the hearing he would wait for documents regarding what improvements had been made to handling suspects with ADHD, before determining whether he should make a avoidance of subsequent deaths report.
Providing a descriptive finding, he said: "Approximately November 8th, 2021, unsupported allegations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a 14-year-old child.
"Probably falsehoods were subsequently embellished and exaggerated through the medium of social media.
"During November 11th, he was questioned by the authorities and following his questioning he was released whilst investigations continued."
The official determined: "Exists no evidence that the acts or omissions of any agency caused or contributed to his death and although it was the outcome of a personal action it is impossible to discern his purpose."
