China's Ice Dancers Under Investigation Following Holding Prop Weapon during Event
ISU officials have launched a formal inquiry after two Chinese ice dancers were seen with an object resembling a replica weapon during a grand prix figure skating event.
Broadcast video captured Ren Junfei and Xing Jianing waiting alongside a large toy in the form of a rocket marked “DF-61” while waiting for their scores in the “kiss and cry” area during the event.
This model represents a recently introduced Chinese-made ground-launched long-range weapon designed for transporting atomic warheads, which was unveiled at a military parade recently.
Officials have acknowledged of an unsuitable plush item seems to have been among those tossed onto the ice by audience members following a routine at the ISU Figure Skating Grand Prix Cup of China event,” the organization commented in an emailed statement.
The item was subsequently handled by the athletes after their performance. The ISU regrets this occurrence and will investigate further.”
The duo finished in eighth place out of ten teams during the ice dancing competition, which was won by Madison Chock and Evan Bates from the US.
