UK Broadens Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Alert List with Eleven Countries
The UK Foreign Office has placed 11 further destinations to its official alert list concerning the dangers of toxic alcohol toxicity from contaminated alcoholic drinks.
The updated travel guidance features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to reports of "an international surge in the incidence of reported cases" of toxic alcohol toxicity.
Just recently, officials had previously added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current register, after several notable events including the tragic demise of six tourists in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being warned that as little as minimal doses of toxic alcohol can cause vision loss or loss of life within 12 to 48 hrs.
What is Methanol and In what way is it Utilized?
Methanol is a toxic industrial alcohol often used in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and paint solvent. This chemical is not meant for ingestion.
While it is generated during the production of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms reduce it to non-dangerous concentrations for human consumption through the distillation process.
But in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to reduce expenses, and because it is flavorless and smell-free, it is extremely challenging to notice.
Official Guidance for Travellers
Authorities representative a senior official stated that all travellers should know the signs of methanol toxicity.
"While consuming alcohol in foreign countries, choose well-known venues and avoid unlicensed drinks or free shots," the official advised.
"In case something appears suspicious, such as a fatigue that's far more intense than usual or blurred eyesight – get medical help immediately."
The full register of countries identified as presenting a danger of toxic alcohol toxicity currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
